Jersey's Conflicting Shores: Commercial Ecologies Diagrams

ABOUT JCS

This is the blog for the first (ever) Urban Design BS studio at Parsons, the New School of Design. The studio is focusing on an area of New Jersey that includes Newark, Harrison, Kearny, and Secaucus.

The goal of the studio is for students to learn:
-TO OBSERVE urban phenomena as made up of complex interactions between infrastructural, architectural, environmental, social, political, and economic systems,
-TO MAP these complexities in ways that reveal urban conflict,
-TO INTERVENE (through design) in the mapped conflicts.

Conflict, in this context, is intended to simply mean urban conditions that do not take into account established communities and their needs. Each student/group was asked to further develop this idea.

This blog is a way for each group to document their research and to share it with their constituency: the communities that are affected by the conflicts mapped.
